WHAT IS JOBURG INDIGENOUS GOSPEL
The City of Johannesburg will be hosting its Indigenous Gospel Music Festival also known as Clap and Tap as one of the Regional Activation programmes linked to Arts Alive. The Indigenous Gospel Music also known as Clap and Tap is one of South Africa’s most unique musical offerings. It is an acapella-style music genre that has become a symbol of religious cultural expression. The genre will be celebrated as part of the Arts Alive programme this Heritage Month.

Rules
Indigenous Gospel Music Festival ONLY open to City of Johannesburg Choirs
There will be a call for registration to participate with choirs to fill in registration form and
submit video clip of the choir singing on or before closing date.
Selection of choirs will take place in a form of adjudication by Judges
During the festival choirs will be adjudicated on the following:
Interpretation of songs
Diction/Articulation
Choreography
Uniformity
Originality
Creativity
Overall stage appearance
Announcement of selected choirs will done once step three of the rules has been concluded
Number of choristers per choir for the festival will be determined by the Covid-19 Alert Level
imposed.
Each choir will be expected to adhere to Covid-19 regulations were registers are filled and
individual choristers are to be scanned and sanitized.
Choirs are expected to ascend the stage in full uniform (this will contribute towards their
scoring).
It will be the responsibility of the choirs to get own food and transport themselves to the
festival venue.
At the festival choirs will be required to sing two songs of not more than 5 minutes each and
no additional time will be added.
Choristers will only be allowed to sing with one choir (no sharing of choristers).
Choirs will be expected to leave the festival venue after their performance/presentation and
only a required number of members will remain behind for the results.
If a choir is called for backstage but cannot be found it will be disqualified for the festival
Selected choirs will get an opportunity to participate at the City of Johannesburg Indigenous
Gospel Music Festival where they will be compensated.
Previous year winners will get an automatic entry the following year to defend their titles
Should the defending champions defend their titles or not in the festival the following year
they will never be allowed to register for participation, rather they will be invited as guest
choirs.
No alcohol or drugs will be allowed during the festival

JUDGING CRITERIA
HEADLINER PERFORMANCE THE MIGHTY SINGERS CHOIRThe Mighty Singers Gospel Choir was founded on the 12 th August 1990 at Chiawelo Ext 2 (Soweto) .The Mighty Singers Gospel Choir’s 24 years existence has seen them achieving
many great things. In 1996 they recorded their first album which was called Onketse ditsetsentle. This first album managed to sell about 300 copies. Through this album, they managed to perform in various concerts and competitions. In 1999, The Mighty Singers Gospel Choir won the Viceroy Five Star Competition. ABOUTThe Indigenous gospel music also known as clap and tap is one of the gospel genre that has its roots in the South African cultural scene. Clap and Tap has become a cultural symbol of worshipping and celebration of life for many in South Africa Heritage, and hosting the indigenous gospel festival in September celebrates our living heritage as a source of identity and continuity.
